Starlight on Gaga, the tour, and the next album → tarasavelo.tumblr.com

retrodancemonster:

Few people have the opportunity to travel the world whilst performing on stage with their best friends. But there are fewer people still who can call Lady Gaga their best friend.

As the support act for the Born This Way Ball world tour, Lady Starlight is, however, lucky enough to also consider herself Gaga’s closest confidant.

“Her and I are actually best friends. We performed together in New York and we are like partners,” Starlight told Access All Areas from her Eastern States hotel.

“But we are not like sexual partners as some people like to suggest. I never squash that rumour though if it does come up. We love that rumour.”

Born Colleen Martin, Starlight was raised in upstate New York before moving to New York City in 2001 when she was 26.

In early 2007, Starlight - a DJ and performance artist - met the as yet undiscovered pop star Lady Gaga.

The two Ladies became good friends and Starlight began to help create Gaga’s elaborate onstage costumes. They collaborated on a stage act called Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue, a surprise hit that made its way to the famed Lollapalooza festival in August 2007.

After the release of her debut single, Just Dance, and album, The Fame, Gaga quickly became the biggest pop star in the world, but Starlight said she hasn’t let superstardom change her.

“She is absolutely still the same person,” Starlight said. “I think that fame only goes to your head if you are not a real artist. If you are a real artist and a good person who loves what they are doing, you are going to be the same person.

“You are going to want all your friends to share in your success and you want to enjoy it because it is a dream.

“Knowing her, I never thought she would change. But everything around you in the celebrity lifestyle encourages you to change. I am just so thankful to have my best friend.”

While Gaga has amassed a fortune and encounters the level of celebrity not seen since the 1980s heyday of Michael Jackson and Madonna, Starlight said while they are on tour they are relatively boring when not performing.

“We literally hang out like we are in college. It is just awesome,” she said. “Imagine going on this huge world tour with your best friend. No one else can say that they have that.

“Really nothing has changed, except it is hard to leave the hotel due to the massive amount of fans. We really just sit around and geek out about creative ideas.”

Starlight is one of a select few who has heard Gaga’s as-yet-untitled fourth album, rumoured to feature the controversial track Princess Die she debuted in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

“It’s amazing,” she screams when asked about it.

“Obviously I can’t say much at all other than she is just continuing to create the music that she loves. Any album that she puts out really is her heart and soul.

“So on some level it won’t be any different to Born This Way, because it will be her saying ‘This is where I am at right now and this is what feels right’.”

Even though they spend so much time together, Starlight said she is still blown away by Gaga’s talent.

“At the end of the day, her behind the piano is just magical. Something shines through her,” she said.

“And that is always my favourite part of the show when she is just behind that piano. The creative soul in her just shoots through. That is the only way I can describe it.

“I have always admired her talent, because it is crazy. “There are just some people that have an absolute gift and are very special in the universe and when she gets behind that piano, this is her destiny.”

“I remember I was having like a really sick day, I wasn’t feeling very well, and I was laying in bed and I got a package from Louis Vuitton. I opened up the package and there was a beautiful bag and it was from a friend from LV. And in the package, Louis Vuitton sent me a little tiara in a little bag, and I didn’t even know that they made them. So, I just remember it was this sort of bittersweet moment because I was having a really sad, depressing day, having some very deep dark thoughts. And then this lovely little sparkler came in the mail and I knew that that day I couldn’t really go outside because there was a lot of mayhem going on in the streets, so I just sat inside all day and smoked marijuana and drunk wine with my tiara on my head.” —Lady Gaga on the day she wrote “Princess Die”  (via iloveyoubutivechosengaga)
